SBTi launches the Automotive Sector Net-Zero Standard draft for consultation

SBTi has opened the newly developed Automotive Net-Zero Standard draft for consultation beginning on the 12th of June and ending of the 11th of August 2025. This standard aims to provide a framework for the automotive industry to set GHG reduction target to align with a Net-Zero pathway for 2050 and amplify the impact of science-based target setting in the sector. Once the new standard is approved it will supersede the Land Transport target guidance and align with the Corporate Net-Zero Standard v2 draft.

Automotive companies in emerging economies have different targets to other regions. The near-term targets for emerging economies are more conservative than other regions. With targets focusing on the percentage of sales that are low-emissions vehicles, the total carbon intensity of new vehicles, and the fuel cycle GHG emission intensity for power train producers. Therefore, more research and development are needed in emerging economies into producing low carbon vehicles and motor technologies to meet these targets. Furthermore, careful planning, supportive policies, and international collaboration will be crucial to ensure a smooth and equitable transition.
