Carbon Tax Deadline Extended to 31 October

A three-month delay of the first carbon tax deadline until 31 October 2020 was among the financial measures totalling R500 billion announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on 22 April to address COVID-19. Previously, the SARS deadline for filing and first payment of carbon tax was 31 July 2020, but this has now been extended for three months to 31 October 2020, as part of government’s COVID-19 response.
“We believe the extension of the carbon tax deadline to 31 October is prudent for two reasons,” says Henk Sa, partner at EcoMetrix Africa. “Firstly, companies are currently preoccupied with urgent business issues related to Covid-19 and, secondly, the government has not finalised most of the regulations that enable companies to mitigate the amount of tax they pay such as the Carbon Offset Administration System (COAS), which is not yet operational as a result of the national lockdown in South Africa.”
