Strategy and Implementation

Doing business in a carbon constrained world

Sustainability Going Mainstream

The number of organisations which acknowledge the strategic need to take control of their environmental performance is growing rapidly. The drivers for change are multiple and increasing in extent, from rising electricity prices, uncertainty regarding water supply and electricity, taxes as well as an increased environmental awareness of customers, investors and society as a whole.

We provide support to organisations in various ways to get a grip on energy, carbon, water and other sustainability challenges, while at the same time creating opportunities to improve the bottom line. Our approach is to develop tailor made optimal solutions, combining a thorough understanding of how organisations work, performance drivers and innovations, which can push performance to the next level.

From a strategic level, determining current performance gaps and defining improvement strategies, down to developing and implementing initiatives, we can assist.

GHG Mitigation Strategy

For many blue-chip companies the management of greenhouse gas emissions, energy and overall sustainability has become part of its core operations. This is not surprising considering the increasing importance of these issues for the strength of a brand and the way resource efficiency can improve the bottom line. Within the practice of managing greenhouse gas emissions, assessing performance is generally called carbon footprinting. However, a carbon footprint often lacks strategic perspective and needs to be taken further to extract true strategic value. At Brundtland, we deal with GHG mitigation and energy management in a strategic context, with a focus on the links between sustainability and key performance drivers, to ensure that synergies are exploited, and performance is improved.

The main services include:

GHG mitigation and energy management strategy development
Performance assessment
Gap analysis and benchmarking
Analysis of performance drivers
Goals and target setting
Development of Key Performance Indicators

Adaptation and Resilience

As the impacts of climate change are manifesting and we start experiencing the effects in terms of rising sea levels, extreme weather events, droughts, wild fires, flooding and loss of biodiversity. The focus on preventing climate change then shifts towards adaptation and resilience.

Adaptation focuses on protecting people and ecosystems from the changes that result from a changing climate. Although distinct from climate change mitigation, there is also overlap between the two focus areas. An example is the energy, water and food nexus, where water scarcity limits cooling capacity for electricity generation and the generation of hydro power.

The main services include:

Identification areas of vulnerability
Climate change impact risk assessments
Prioritisation of risk mitigation
Adaptation strategies

Performance Monitoring

Brundtland provides a suite of monitoring and reporting solutions, either online or server-based. These solutions are tailored to the specific needs of the client, making use of our flexible Enterprise Performance and Carbon Management (EPCAM TM) platform.

The EPCAM monitoring and reporting platform is fully adaptable and used both by corporates and cities. EPCAM can be tailored to specific in-house requirements or any requirements emanating from applicable reporting standards. The platform includes modules for Carbon Tax and GHG reporting, which can be used to optimise your tax liability by applying the appropriate calculation methods and technical factors. The data collected can also be used for technical performance management.

At Brundtland, we combine our technical and information systems expertise with sound management consultancy experience.

GHG Emissions, Energy and Water Management

Annual monitoring and reporting of energy and water usage and related greenhouse gas emissions has become good practice around the world. Organisations report under various standards such as the GHG Protocol, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the Global Reporting Initiative and ISO 14064. We assist business and government in the development of carbon footprints, also called greenhouse gas inventories. The focus is on creating additional value by looking beyond the absolute consumption and emissions of the organisation. This is achieved, among others, by providing insights into consumption and greenhouse gas emissions intensities and comparing this with benchmarks.

Our services typically include the following:

Carbon, energy and water footprinting
Developing greenhouse gas inventories
Developing sector benchmarks
International benchmarking

Development of Low Carbon Projects

Investing in green technologies and appliances which one is not familiar with can be a daunting task. Our team at Brundtland combines financial and technical expertise to assess different options and provide independent advice on what can work best for the organisation in terms of financial return, operational risks and sustainability impact.
