Brundtland Supports Carbon Offsetting Achievements in Commercial Buildings

Brundtland is pleased to support the carbon offsetting efforts of three commercial office buildings that have achieved Net Zero Carbon Level 2 certification. As part of Redefine’s commitment to sustainability, a pilot project was launched for 2 Pybus and 90 Rivonia in Sandton, and Rosebank Link in Rosebank. These buildings, which already held Green Star New Building Design and As-Built ratings, as well as Existing Building Performance (EBP) ratings, are now the first in South Africa to achieve this certification based on actual measured energy consumption data.

A Structured Approach to Net Zero

Redefine followed a three-step process to achieve Net Zero:

  1. Improving Energy Efficiency – Conducting a detailed energy consumption assessment.
  2. Maximizing Renewable Energy – Using on-site solar power generation.
  3. Carbon Offsetting – Purchasing carbon credits to account for remaining emissions, with Brundtland assisting in this step.

Steps Taken for Certification

  • To achieve this certification, the following actions were implemented:
  • Assessing Energy Consumption: A 12-month energy data review (electricity and diesel) was conducted to calculate energy efficiency per square meter and rank the buildings accordingly.
  • Incorporating On-Site Solar Energy: Energy generated by solar panels on the buildings was deducted from the total consumption.
  • Considering Off-Site Renewable Energy: Since wheeling or feeding back into the grid is not yet a viable option in Johannesburg, this could not be included but remains a future goal.
  • Carbon Offsetting: The remaining energy usage was offset through the purchase of carbon credits, achieving the following reductions:
      • 2 Pybus Road: 11.5% offset
      • 90 Rivonia Road: 56.3% offset
      • Rosebank Link: 32.9% offset

Supporting Sustainable Commercial Spaces

These efforts reflect important progress in reducing the environmental impact of large commercial buildings. Brundtland, in collaboration with Solid Green, is proud to have supported this initiative, contributing to the broader transition toward more sustainable office spaces.
