Draft IRP 2023 – For Public Comment
The IRP 2023 represents a strategic blueprint for electricity generation, designed to safeguard a reliable power supply. This comprehensive plan operates within two distinct time frames: the immediate focus on addressing current generation capacity limitations and system requirements until 2030 to bridge the existing supply gap, and a forward-looking perspective from 2031 to 2050, dedicated to long-term electricity generation planning. The latter period places a significant emphasis on achieving a robust Net Zero electricity sector.
Grounded in a rigorous scientific process, the IRP 2023 systematically assesses various scenarios and integrates the latest developments within the dynamic landscape of the country’s electricity industry. Several key assumptions used in the IRP 2019 have significantly changed for the IRP 2023, including the electricity demand projection, Eskom’s energy availability factor, Eskom’s coal fired power plants shutdown plan, as well as the cost of new power generation technologies.
The public and interested stakeholders are invited to provide their insights by submitting written comments on the draft IRP 2023 until February 23, 2024.
