The Carbon Tax Act 2019
The Carbon Tax Act 2019 concerns the imposition of a tax on the release of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Specifically, carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent GHG emissions in South Africa. The document provides thresholds over which sectors are required to report their emissions and potentially pay tax. In these cases, the document also provides instruction for the method to calculate tax liability and how to report it to SARS. Furthermore, it outlines certain allowances which reduce tax liability. These allowances include: carbon offsets, basic tax-free allowances on certain fuels, performance allowance etc. The Act explains when these allowances are applicable and how to calculate them. This document should be read in conjunction with the regulations which provide more detail on certain calculations. These regulations can be found on the EcoMetrix website, under Policies and Regulations.
